AMERICAN CRYPTIDS
American Cryptids is a live documentary series about cryptids: creatures like Bigfoot and the Chupacabra who are not yet recognized by traditional science, and the people who’ve encountered them. Hosts Andrew Farmer and Andrew R. Butler weave together folklore, music and history to create a show that explores loneliness, legend, storytelling, American Regionalism, and how it feels when no one believes in you.
Andrew Duncan Farmer is a writer, performer, comedian and recipient of the 2018 Jonathan Larson Grant. His work has been produced at MoMA, Ars Nova, The Williamstown Theatre Festival, Guild Hall, The Upright Citizens Brigade and The Yale School of Drama, amongst others. Collaborations with Butler include BLESSING (Yale Institute for Music Theatre, Playwrights Horizons Downtown commission, Rhinebeck Writers Retreat), The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (TheatreworksUSA commission), Finn the Fearless (Ars Nova Uncharted Residency, Theatre Aspen, Polyphone Music Festival) and American Cryptids (The Civilians R&D Group.) Recent plays include The Gray Man (Pipeline Theatre Company, FGP Playground), The Fall of Hotel Mudafier…(Williamstown Theatre Festival), and I Heard Sex Noises, written with Claire Rothrock, Ryann Weir & Annie Tippe (Ars Nova Residency, currently in development as a television series with Imperative Entertainment). Andrew is a contributing writer for Vogue and Reductress, and his stories have been featured in New York Magazine, Brokelyn, The Moth and The Huffington Post. He’s also a writer/performer and teaching artist with The Story Pirates and a member of comedy groups Gentlemen Party and Political Subversities. Andrew R. Butler is a composer, writer, and performer based in Brooklyn and hailing from the Florida Panhandle. In 2018, Andrew received the Jonathan Larson Grant for emerging musical theatre writers and his sci-fi folk-concert musical Rags Parkland Sings The Songs Of The Future premiered at Ars Nova to critical acclaim. His works include several collaborations with playwright Andrew Farmer: Finn The Fearless, BLESSING, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and American Cryptids. Other work includes co-music/lyrics for Jacklyn Backhaus’ Folk Wandering; music/lyrics for Anna Kerrigan’s The Dixon Family Album; music/lyrics for On The Rocks Theatre Co.’s Edelweiss and The Hole Story; writer/performer with Political Subversities; co-founder of experimental theatre co. harunalee; actor/composer/teacher with Story Pirates.
