JOB POSTINGS
Extended Play Editor
Job Description
Updated: Feb 9, 2024
The Civilians seeks an Editor to strategize, write, curate and edit articles for the organization’s Extended Play webpage. A free online platform and hub for artists and audiences to explore unique forms of socially-engaged theater and performance, Extended Play features interviews conducted by and between artists, project profiles, and essays exploring creative processes, community, politics, and new innovations in storytelling. The Civilians is a 23-year-old theater company, dedicated to ambitious, theatrical new work that dynamically engages with our broader social and political environment. We support artists’ efforts to interrogate our lived experience, question and test the stories that shape our world, and awaken new thinking and perceptions through their creations, and Extended Play is an extension of that mission.
The Extended Play Editor is a contract position who works closely with the New Work Program Manager and The Civilians’ artistic staff in a highly collaborative setting. The Civilians is committed to the diversity of its artists and staff and ensures this is reflected in our hiring process.
Scope of work includes, but is not limited to the following:
- Strategize and research ideas for Extended Play
- Identify and reach out to potential interviewees, interviewers, and guest writers.
- Research published content on other websites for possible re-publishing on Extended Play, and create and sustain relationships with the editors of other sites regarding republishing permissions.
- Write and edit original content for Extended Play.
- Edit Extended Play content created by other contributors.
- Create and publish Extended Play articles on Word Press.
- Maintain the Extended Play publishing calendar.
- Attend weekly Extended Play planning meetings with the New Work Program Manager and Resident Dramaturg as well as bi-monthly staff meetings.
- Communicate with Civilians Marketing Associate regarding published articles and coordinating their representation on social media and other communications.
- Collect, maintain and share digital data through Google analytics regarding the readership and performance of Extended Play posts
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will have strong writing and editing skills. Prior experience with a range of artistic processes, writing and editing articles, researching content, curating an arts blog, and managing editorial content are all key assets. Experience with Word Press is helpful, but not required. The role requires a high attention to detail, working independently to drive a project forward, but also collaboratively within an artistic department to align with the ongoing programming, an interest in various theatrical practices and how they intersect with social and political issues, and a natural curiosity.
TERM AND COMPENSATION
This position is contract position that can be performed remotely or in person. The initial fee of $5000 will cover an initial set-up phase, updating and planning of content and outreach to potential paid writers between now and June 30, 2024. Following this initial phase a monthly or yearly contract to continue to oversee Extended Play will be negotiated in good faith.
The Civilians does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, disability, age, religion, sexual orientation, or national or ethnic origin. Candidates with relevant experience are encouraged to apply by submitting a cover letter and resume and three references.
Please apply by March 10, by sending all application materials to jobs@thecivilians.org with the subject line: Extended Play Editor
