The Civilians’ 23/24 Gala celebrates A NOVEL REALITY — theater that awakens new thinking and perceptions. Join us as we look back on the some of the novel works we’ve created, and build resources for the novel works still to come.
Playwright Anne Washburn and actor Quincy Tyler Bernstine will each be honored as “Civilian of the Year.” They’ve been associated with our creative community since its early days, and both are now at the top of their respective careers — Anne as a brilliantly visionary creator of worlds, and Quincy as a uniquely authentic creator of roles. Both are major contributors to theater on the leading edge, including Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play (now celebrating its 10th anniversary).
We’ll pay tribute to these artists in true Civilians fashion, crafting an original song for each with lyrics pulled from verbatim interviews with their closest collaborators. The evening’s entertainment also includes a collage of songs and excerpts from our 22 years of adventurous productions. Your support makes it possible for us to bring even more ambitious new theater into the world.
